Learn Math with Us! Solve Word Problems Using Unchanged Models
Model drawing has been taught in schools as it has shown to help students visualise word problems and understand them better. Model drawing has also aided many students in solving complex word problems that would otherwise have been even more time-consuming without constructing models.
One of the commonly seen heuristic skills is solving word problems using Total Unchanged Models.
Here are some examples that represent this heuristic skill.
Learn Chemistry with Us! Chemical Bonding
Many Chemistry students have shared with us that they do not understand the difference between the ‘types of chemical bonding’ and ‘types of chemical structures’. Past Year Examination Papers have shown that this is one of the most commonly tested topics and many students still find it challenging to approach despite much practice. Marks are often lost due to the wrong use of keywords or the lack of keywords, making it frustrating as students begin to feel like it is impossible to attain good grades in Chemistry.
That is, however, untrue.
Let’s work through some common misconceptions together with some of the notes we’ve prepared for our students!
Self-Care and Mental Health for Students
Mental health is an important and common issue that many adults and students struggle with. Many students choose not to disclose their mental health issues that they face at home or in school due to social stigma or the fear of being judged. As mentors and parents, it is important that that we lend them the support whenever they need it, especially so in their younger years before these symptoms lead to bigger issues in the future.
We understand that every student copes with their problems and stress differently. Here are some of the ways that we have found to be helpful in giving the support that students need, as well as a reminder to ourselves to let our hair down at times.
Learn Chemistry with us! Acids, Bases and Salts
Many acids and bases occur naturally in nature, such as citric acid in fruits like oranges and lemons. Similarly, many bases are found in our daily lives such as limewater. In fact, we use many of these acids in our day-to-day lives, such as vinegar or acetic acid in the kitchen, boric acid for laundry, and baking soda for the purposes of cooking.
Knowing where acids and bases come from allows you to see the big picture and relate more to the concept of reactions.
What happens when acids react with metals? Why does lead not appear to react with acid? What are the products formed each time there is an acid reaction? Let’s find out together!
Learn Primary Math with us! Solve Word Problems Using Supposition Method
At The Collective Knowledge, our students are taught heuristics skills that to solve complex word problems. Applying the right heuristics skills is crucial for students to tackle challenging questions in the most efficient way possible. Here are some word problems solved using the Supposition Method.
Learn Chemistry with Us! Chemical Bonding
Chemical Bonding is a fundamental topic in Chemistry that many students tend to neglect. It is important to have a strong foundation in this topic as students will realise that mastering this concept will help in answering questions from other topics such as Mole Calculations, Acids & Bases, Metals and more.
Here are some of the important definitions that may help students understand Chemical Bonding better.
5 Tips to Improve Your Memory and Retention of Information
Parents and students have shared that studying for examinations seems to be the most dreadful thing that students have to go through during their time in school. With the right techniques and tips to help with memory retention, we have realised that it is possible to make learning and taking examinations a more enjoyable experience for students.
At The Collective Knowledge, we share 5 useful tips that we believe will help students remember what they learn and recall them in the most accurate way possible.
1. Recall before Writing
2. Visualise Concepts
3. Use the chaining technique
4. Revisit the Mistakes
5. Use Acronyms
What do students think of 2020?
It all begins with an idea.
The long awaited holidays are here! How different has 2020 been for our kids? What activities should we plan for them? How do they actually want to spend their holiday?
Holidays are a special time of the year that bring together our loved ones to celebrate and spend quality time. This is the best time to remind ourselves what holidays are really about. As such, we asked 6 kids about their 2020 experience and here’s what they have to say!
SCHOOL’S OUT, WHAT’S UP is the first part of a series where we speak to kids and youth to find out what’s on their mind.
Share with us your thoughts on how we should make the most of the school holidays for our kids! Just tag us at @thecollectiveknowledge on Facebook & Instagram!
